Live Bed Bug

What does a bed bug look like?

Bed bugs are oval shaped and a brownish color.  They live on the blood of animals or humans.  After feeding their bodies swell and are a reddish color.

What are the first signs of bed bugs?

The best way to look for physical signs of bed bugs. When cleaning, changing bedding, or staying away from home, look for:

  • Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses caused by bed bugs being smushed
  • Dark spots (about this size of a dot) which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric like a marker would
  • Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny & pale-yellow skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger
  • Actual live bed bugs

How do I check for bed bugs?

When bed bugs aren’t feeding, they are at rest in the smallest of spaces.  Around the bed, they can be found near the piping, seams and tags of the mattress and box spring, and in cracks on the bed frame and headboard.

If the room is heavily infested, you may find bed bugs:

  • In the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, in the folds of curtains.
  • In drawer joints.
  • In electrical receptacles and appliances.
  • Under loose wallpaper and wall hangings.
  • At the junction where the wall and the ceiling meet.
  • The head of a screw.

Since bed bugs are very small and can squeeze into small hiding spots,  if you can fit a credit card in the area a bed bug can squeeze in.

What do bed bug bites look like?

Bed bug bites are red, itchy bumps on the skin and typically on the hands, arms or shoulders.

Can you see bed bugs with the naked eye?

Bedbugs don’t grow much longer than 0.2 inches and can be seen by the naked eye.

What is the main cause of bed bugs?

Bed bugs can come from other infested areas or from used furniture. They can hitch a ride in luggage, purses, backpacks, or other items placed on soft or upholstered surfaces. They can travel between rooms in multi-unit buildings, such as apartment complexes and hotels.

How long does a bed bug infestation take?

Typically,  it takes at least seven weeks for a bed bug to grow from an egg to an adult, so there should be no new adults from eggs during that period. If all adult bugs are present one can reasonably assume that the infestation has been there for more than seven weeks.
