Summertime Pests:
How to Keep Mosquitos at Bay

Mosquitos are definitely one of the top summertime pests, especially if you have kids who are still young enough to get pretty bad mosquito bites that itch for days. As an adult, you might just be able to swat at mosquitos and try to keep their stingers from sinking in too deep, but your kids probably can’t do that yet, which means they’re going to scream if they get bitten. Here are some tips on how to keep mosquitos at bay when your family spends lots of time outdoors this summer.

Prevent bites with repellent

Start with repellent. This is your first line of defense against mosquito bites, so use a repellent that contains either DEET or picaridin. It’s important to remember that mosquitoes like to hang out near shady spots on your property and near standing water, which is why using both repellent and barrier methods can be even more effective.

Repel Mosquitos with plants

Planting plants in your backyard that will repel mosquitos is a great way to keep mosquitoes from enjoying your backyard as much as you do. Chrysanthemums, for example, are known to repel mosquitos and other pests that come looking for a bite! As summer winds down and we look forward towards fall and winter, it’s a good idea to stock up on supplies that will help keep mosquitoes at bay all season long.

What Plants Repel Mosquitos

Marigolds

Marigolds, an easy-to-grow annual flower, emit a smell that deters mosquitoes.

Rosemary Plant

Rosemary

Rosemary’s woody smell can keep mosquitoes as well as cabbage moths and carrot flies away.

The Lavender oil from the plant can hinder a mosquito’s ability to smell.

Basil Plant

Basil is another plant that can be used as a pest repellent. The strong smell the basil leaves give off can keep pests at bay.

Use a light trap or bug zapper

If you find yourself not able to stand mosquitos any longer, consider a light trap in your backyard. These traps attract bugs with a light and then kill them using CO2 or heat. Light traps are a great option for mosquitos because they use no chemicals. If you have small children, pets, or gardens nearby, however, be careful – light traps can attract insects and other pests as well!
